The First Settlers

Thursday, 9/21:brief discussion of Native American Unit and a preview of this unit. Went over CLASS POLICIES. Then students take a "Pre Test" on poetry terms.

 

 

Friday: Students watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVm1VoEvGVI on the first settlers; link also found on schoology. Students must take 10 notes/facts on the video. This assignment is also on schoology. The film and notes are due by the next class period. 

Monday, 9/25: watched short videos on John Smith/Jamestown and Plymouth/Mayflower; both videos are on schoology. Then, assigned questions on Smith due tomorrow.

 

Tuesday:  Class-earned field trip to Goshen Coffee. Students must have guardian-signed permission slip prior to walking to the coffee shop during class.

 

Wednesday: Discussed John Smith questions, then assigned the questions on Plymouth/Bradford.

 

Thursday: quiz on Bradford and Smith.  Discussed Bradford/Plymouth, and then assigned Jonathan Edwards  and Cotton Mather reading and questions.

 

Friday: Worked on Edwards and Mather questions, which are due on Monday

Monday, 10/2: Informal discussion of Edwards and Mather questions. Then, 

Begin Anne Bradstreet poems questions working in pairs. Complete "To My Dear and Loving Husband" questions by tomorrow. 

Tuesday: complete the Anne Bradstreet poems questions in pairs.

Wednesday: One-day graded discussion on AB poems. Students must have 7 points by the end of the day; students who are absent may write a formal paragraph answering the question, how are Bradstreet's poems typical of Puritans? Submit the paragraph on schoology.

Thursday: Complete GD on AB Poems. Kids who are absent can submit a formal paragraph on schoology. Assigned a letter inspired by the unit.  The assignment is on schoology.  .click here for the letter assignment.   

Friday: Assigned an illustration inspired by the unit. Must include the title, the writer's name, and a quote. No tracing! Extra credit for best. 

Tuesday, 10/10: Choose best letter and illustration.

 

Wednesday: Defined Literary Terms on schoology. 

Thursday: We went over the Literary Terms.

Friday: Went over the schedule for next week, and played a game.

Monday: Begin next unit!

Tuesday:Brainstormed questions for Abby England. Informal discussion of DW 7. Prepared for lit terms test by doing DW 8. Lit devices examples. For DW 8, kids  write 3 examples of each of the 14 devices listed in the Lit. Terms handout (Part I). 

Wednesday: Prepare for lit terms test. 

Thursday: Guest speaker Abby England, 3rd hour. 

Friday: Practice lit terms with a partner.

Monday,  practice for lit test.

Tuesday: literature Terms Test. Then, tableau time! In groups of 4 students create a tableau inspired by the unit. 5 extra credit points for the best one.
