Monday, 11/17 Completed reading schedule for novel of choice. Then read 1/13 of novel. Also, looked at Clarkesworld; read letters from the editor.
Tuesday: Checked reading schedule and then had a virtual interview with Neil Clark of Clarkesworld.
Wednesday: read.
Thursday: Checked reading schedule, and then we formed reading groups and talked about books.
Friday: Checked reading schedule and then students read their novels.
Monday, 11/24: Checked reading schedule. Kids get back in groups for book updates; assigned "art day" tomorrow: bring pencils or pens with which to illustrate.
Tuesday: Played a trivia game for extra credit.
Monday, 12/1: Checked reading schedule and then book groups: update the group on your plot. Then, answer the following question: How does your book compare to the stories we have read? Then, read.
Tuesday: E-learning day; kids checked their reading schedules and then read.
Wednesday: Graded discussion on novels and Vina Prasad. Kids who were absent can write a makeup paragraph answering the question, are you glad you chose your novel?
Thursday: Checked reading schedule and then read.
Friday: Guest speaker, Vina Prasad.
Monday, 12/8: Read.
Tuesday: Checked reading schedule and assigned grade. Then, assigned a letter inspired by the novel--due tomorrow at the start of class. Letters to Clarke or Prasad will be forwarded.
Wednesday: Choose the best letter.
Thursday: Begin next unit: Your Turn.

Tuesday: Art Day! Students will illustrate a scene from their novel. Must include name of novel, quote, and the writer.
Wednesday: Assigned the final exam, checked the reading schedule, and chose the best illustration.
Final exam: write a formal essay answering one of the following questions:
what did you learn about science fiction? which skill did you most develop? which classmate(s) most impressed you? what is the theme(s) of your novel?
The final counts for 1/9 of your grade. It should be 1-2 pages; 12 point font; double spaced, and formal. MLA style. You will bring your essay to class and share it in a fishbowl. 1/2 of you grade will come from the writing; the other 1/2 will come from the fishbowl.
