
The Average Joes and Janes Unit
Kids playing catch, old women bowling, little girls running with their dads, friends fishing, high school girls figuring out what competition and letting go means, yesterday's hero stuck in the past . . . this unit focuses on the ordinary people whose lives are touched by sports.
Extra Credit: During this unit, you can listen to an episode of the The Jungle, the official EHS Sports Podcast. Then, write a formal paragraph on what you learned. Students may do this up to three times during this unit. Once this unit is over, this opportunity is, too. Each paragraph is worth up to 5 points.
Tuesday, 1/7: Quick tour of the website. Then, Watch a story about an Average Joe. (Ben Comen, the slowest cross-country runner in America):

Then, assigned Essential Questions on schoology, due tomorrow at the beginning of class.
Wednesday: Watched a video about Dale Webster. and this one, too (Dale Webster Video II). And, watched a video about "The Jackie Robinson of Edwardsville," Mr. Herman Shaw. All EHS Athletic Hall of Fame videos can be found here.
Thursday: Assigned reading and questions on "Raymond's Run." Assignment and pdf are on schoology. Or, if you'd rather listen to the text as you read it: "Raymond's Run" (audio book). This is due Monday, whether we are in person Friday or not.
Friday: kids check in online and then complete Raymond's Run on their own.
Monday, 1/13: All class, informal discussion of the Essential Questions, Ben Comen, Dale Webster, and Herman Shaw.
Tuesday: Assigned questions on "The 7-10 Split."
Wednesday: All-class graded discussion on "Raymond's Run" and "The 7-10 Split." Students who were absent can submit a formal paragraph answering one of the questions we discussed (the ones assigned); pls submit that on schoology.
Thursday: Went over classroom policies. Then, in groups assigned questions on "Fishing.
Friday: Assigned questions on "The Ex-Basketball Player."
Tuesday, 1/21: All-class, formal graded discussion on "Fishing" and the "Ex-Basketball Player."
Wednesday: Day 2; kids who miss school can submit a makeup paragraph answering one of the questions we talked about.
Thursday: Gave Lit Terms.
Friday: Assigned "Finding Myself: On the Field and in the Gym." Questions are on schoology.
Monday, 1/27: Assigned "To An Athlete Dying Young" in groups. Questions on schoology.
Tuesday: Written quiz on To An Athlete and Finding Myself. Students who miss the quiz must submit a formal paragraph on the theme of one of those on schoology. GD on "To An Athlete" and "Finding Myself..."
Wednesday: Day 2 of the GD. Students who miss a day can submit a paragraph answering one of the questions we discussed. The paragraph is due before class tomorrow; suibmit on schoology.
Thursday: Watched a video about crew. And this one. Then, assigned for reading and questions on schoology, "The 8-oared Crew." As you read this story, consider the themes--particularly regarding competition, the role that the money plays in sports, leadership, coaching, and family.
Friday: Group quiz on "The 8-Oared Crew." Students who miss the quiz should submit a formal paragraph on schoology in place of the quiz. The assignment is on schoology.
Monday, 2/3: Then assigned: "Baseball," "Cut." and ""Fathers Playing Catch with Sons" by Donald Hall.
Tuesday: Test on "Baseball," "Cut," and "Fathers Playing Catch with Sons."
Wednesday: completed informal discussion of "Cut" and "Fathers...". Then, assigned the Average Joe Unit Cool Down on Schoology--due tomorrow at the beginning of class.
