Famous Folks Unit

In this unit we look at the lives and careers of "Kid Delicious," Mark Fidrych, Roberto Clemente', Emile Griffith, Mia Hamm and Arthur Ashe. Then, students complete an independent research project on a famous athlete of their (guided) choice.

Extra Credit: for the Famous Folks unit, students may watch an episode of "Losers" on Netflix or an ESPN "30 for 30" series episode and then write a paragraph answering the question, what did you learn? Submit through schoology. Students may do this three times this semester. This is worth up to 5 points per episode. 

Wednesday, March 4: Assigned, completed, then discussed Famous Folks Unit Warm Up.

Thursday: Assigned to be completed by the next class period 10 Cornell notes total on "The Bird Fell to Earth." Submit notes through schoology (Must have slug, fact/quote/summary/question and source).

Friday: Continue reading and taking notes. Must have 10 more notes and complete at least the first article, "The Bird Fell to Earth."

Monday, 3/9 : Quiz on "The Bird Fell to Earth."  The makeup is a formal paragraph on the words that best describe MF. Watch MF video; get 10 more Cornell notes; add them to the 10 taken from SI article.

Tuesday:Assigned 10 more notes on Fidrych on film and Donahue article. 

Wednesday: Test on Fidrych. Students who are absent must submit a formal paragraph answering the question, what is the main lesson that can be learned from studying Mark Fidrych? Submit on Schoology.

 

Thursday: Assigned 10 Cornell notes on  Ring of Fire (cite as Klores). Watched the first 30 minutes.

Friday:  We watched for approximately 25 minutes. Take 10 more Cornell Notes on Griffith.

Monday, 3/16:  Complete Ring of Fire. Take 10 more Cornell Notes.

Tuesday: Complete RoF. Begin reading the Smith article on EG above. Have a total of 40 CNs by the end of the day.

Wednesday: Finish article and Cousins piece. Take 10 more CNs. Use other sources if you have to. Submit 50 before class tomorrow.

Thursday: Test on EG. Students will have a 1/2-class, peer and self-evaluated graded discussion. The makeup is a formal paragraph answering the question, what lessons can be learned from the EG story?

Friday: Tableau time! Create a tableau inspired by the unit. Ex credit for the best.

Monday, 3/23:

Roberto Clemente' Week

 Began watching PBS documentary on Clemente'. Take 10 Cornell Notes. Students who aren't here, should watch the ESPN documentary and take 10 notes.

Tuesday: Complete watching PBS film on Clemente'. Take 10 more Cornell Notes. Students who miss class can find another article of video to take Cornell Notes on.

Wednesday: Take 10 more CNs on RC on Dvorchak article.

Thursday: Create a Work Cited page for your Clemente' research; include the sources you've used thus far. Find another source; add 10 more CNs. Wikipedia is NOT a credible source. Always begin with Wikipedia. 

 

Friday: Find another source; add it to your WC page. Add 10 more CNs.

 

Monday, 3/30: Submit WC before class starts. Then, huge test on RC.  Students will have a 1/2-class, peer and self-evaluated graded discussion. The makeup is a formal paragraph answering the question, how does RC inspire you? 

Tuesday: Begin next FF: Mia! Mia! Mia! Take 10 CNs with a partner and begin a Work Cited.

Tuesday, 4/7: Watch Dare to Dream and add 10 more CN's and 2 sources on your Mia Hamm WC.

Wednesday: Day 2 of watching Dare to Dream. Kids take 10 more notes for 30 with a minimum of 2 sources.

Thursday: finish D2D and or begin day 4 of Mia. Must have 3 sources and 40 CNs. Assigned WC on MH due Monday before test.

 

Friday: Complete Day 5. Complete 50 CNs and be ready for Massive TEST on Monday.  

 

Monday, 4/13: Submit Work Cited before class. Massive Test: fishbowl discussions by thirds.  In groups, students discuss the following quesitons: 

How does Mia compare to each of the other famous folks? Which words best describe Mia? How did Mia's upbringing shape her adult life? Why should Mia's life be studied? What are the most important lessons to learn from studying her life and career? What did you learn about women's sports? How does she inspire you?

 

20 Points Individually Graded:

20 points = great preparation, energy and engagement  

16 points = some evident

12 points = not much there

1 = silent as a stone

Monday, 4/20:  Read My Dear Camera and answer questions in schoology.

Tuesday: Continue study of Ashe  by watching the British Broadcasting Company. By the end of the day , 30-40 Cornell Notes total from at least 3 sources.  

Wednesday: Take 10 more CNs and prepare for the test tomorrow.

Thursday: Unit Test. Fishbowls on Ashe and the unit as a whole. Students who miss will have a separate fishbowl when they return.

 

Friday: Makeup fishbowls, then begin next unit--Personal Expert!

Thursday: continue fishbowls for kids who didn't go yesterday.

Friday: seniors had a meeting 3rd hour; 2nd and 4th played the Trivia Spectacular for extra credit. There is no makeup.

Monday, 3/4Begin study of Roberto Clemente' (3 resources above--3 articles and 1 film). Assigned 1 reading by tomorrow: Arriba Roberto! by Steve Wulf. Assigned 10 CN's on Wulf; submit through schoology.

Tuesday: Read the other two Clemente' pieces above and add 10 more notes for the day. 5 or so from each article. 

Wednesday: Watch Clemente' PBS film and take 10 CNs. Add to existing RC CNs.

Thursday: Complete Clemente' film. Take 10 more CNs for a total of 40.

Friday: Assign a letter inspired by Clemente'. Due Monday.  Click here for letter directions.

Monday, 3/11: Choose best letter.

Tuesday:  Assigned article for tomorrow by Gary Smith.  Click here for a link to the article "The Secret Life of Mia Hamm" by Gary Smith. Must have a minimum of 10 CNs from that article.

Friday: Complete watching Discovering Mavericks or Riding Giants; take 10 more CNs for a total of 30.  

Monday, 10/23: Graded discussion on Clemente', Hamm, and the surfers. 7 points; the makeup is a formal paragraph on schoology.

 

Tuesday: Began watching More than a Champion about Arthur Ashe. Students take 10 notes on film on schoology.

 

Wednesday: Complete the film; take 10 more notes.

Thursday: Read "My Dear Camera" and answer the questions. The links to both  schoology.

Friday: Group test on AA/Famous Folks Unit. In groups students discuss answers from MDC questions; then, the group "conclusions or differences of opinions" are shared w/ the class. The makeup for students who are not here is a formal paragraph answering one of the questions from the MDC questions. Submit on schoology. 

Monday,    Discuss guest speaker. Then, students read  "My Dear Camera." Answer questions; Submit through schoology. Must be completed by next class.
