Famous Folks Unit

In this unit we look at the lives and careers of "Kid Delicious," Mark Fidrych, Roberto Clemente', Emile Griffith, Mia Hamm and Arthur Ashe. Then, students complete an independent research project on a famous athlete of their (guided) choice.

Extra Credit: for the Famous Folks unit, students may watch an episode of "Losers" on Netflix or an ESPN "30 for 30" series episode and then write a paragraph answering the question, what did you learn? Submit through schoology. Students may do this three times this semester. This is worth up to 5 points per episode. 

Wednesday, 2/14:Assigned, completed, then discussed Famous Folks Unit Warm Up.

Thursday: Play a game for extra credit.

 

Tuesday, 2/20: Assigned to be completed by the next class period 10 Cornell notes on Mark Fidrych SI article. Submit notes through schoology (Must have slug, fact/quote/summary and source.

Friday: Quiz on The Shadowboxer  (3rd and 4th hours ONLY); the makeup is a formal paragraph answering the following questions, which words best describe the Emile Griffith story.  Then, begin watching Ring of Fire . We watched for approximately 25 minutes. Take 10 more Cornell Notes on Griffith.

Monday, 3/26: Continue watching Ring of Fire. Get to 109:00; take 10 more Cornell Notes.

 

Tuesday: conclude Ring of Fire; take 10 more notes. Assign ""Stop the Fight, Who Killed Benny Paret"" by Norm Cousins. Must have a total of 40.

 

Wednesday: 350-word Free Write on MF and EG.

 

Then, EITHER fishbowls on Fidrych and Griffin OR a letter inspired by the unit thus far. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF THE FISHBOWL! Individually graded on schoology.

Monday, 3/4Begin study of Roberto Clemente' (3 resources above--3 articles and 1 film). Assigned 1 reading by tomorrow: Arriba Roberto! by Steve Wulf. Assigned 10 CN's on Wulf; submit through schoology.

Tuesday: Read the other two Clemente' pieces above and add 10 more notes for the day. 5 or so from each article. 

Wednesday: Watch Clemente' PBS film and take 10 CNs. Add to existing RC CNs.

Thursday: Complete Clemente' film. Take 10 more CNs for a total of 40.

Monday, 3/11: Choose best letter.

Tuesday:  Assigned article for tomorrow by Gary Smith.  Click here for a link to the article "The Secret Life of Mia Hamm" by Gary Smith. Must have a minimum of 10 CNs from that article.

Wednesday: quiz on Mia Hamm article then begin watching film: Dare to Dream (links are at the top of the page and on schoology). Completed to :26. Add 10 more Cornell Notes. 

Thursday: Complete watching Dare to Dream. Add  10 more Cornell Notes.

Friday: Began watching More than a Champion about Arthur Ashe. Students take 10 notes on film on schoology.

 

Monday, 3/18: Complete the film; take 10 more notes.

Tuesday: Read "My Dear Camera" and answer the questions. The links to both  schoology.

 Monday,: Began fishbowl discussions of the unit. Students will successfully discuss the following: 1. Which advice of Arthur's was best? 2. Which words best describe Ashe? 3. Which famous folk was most inspiring? 4. What did you learn about what it means to be a famous athlete? 5. Which famous folk was least necessary/vital to continue studying? 6. Which skill did you most develop during this unit? 7. What type of athlete are you thinking about studying for your independent research project?

 

This is a 20 point grade; the makeup is a formal essay answering one of the questions we discussed. Submit on schoology. 

Tuesday: finished fishbowls and began the next unit--research.

 

Begin watching "Riding Giants." Kids who are absent can watch "Discovering Mavericks," as a substitute. Must have 30 Cornell Notes by the start of school on Thursday. submit on schoology.

Friday: Group test on AA/Famous Folks Unit. In groups students discuss answers from MDC questions; then, the group "conclusions or differences of opinions" are shared w/ the class. The makeup for students who are not here is a formal paragraph answering one of the questions from the MDC questions. Submit on schoology. 

Thursday, 11/2: Unit review (trivia spectacular).

Friday: switch to research unit.

Monday,    Discuss guest speaker. Then, students read  "My Dear Camera." Answer questions; Submit through schoology. Must be completed by next class. 

 

Tuesday: Test on Arthur Ashe. In small groups, discuss the questions. Then, a reporter reports back to the class your best group answer back to the class. The makeup is an essay on which Famous Folk inspired you most.  

Wednesday: Art Day. Bring art supplies; share them. Illustrate any scene from the Famous Folks unit. No words are necessary on the work. 

 

Thursday: 2nd and 3rd hour go to the play; 5th hour, complete drawings and get assigned a topic for independent research. 

 

Friday: 2nd and 3rd hours, choose best drawings and then begin independent research topic by being assigned a topic. Then switch to next unit.
