American Literature, Semester 1

The first semester starts with the continent before it was inhabited by European settlers and concludes not long afer the American Revolution.

Everything we do this year is related to this unit. YOU are the subject. Who are you now? What is your vision for your future?

Who were the first successful settlets? What was their life like? Why did they come here? How did they get along with the Native Americans? Who were their leaders? 

IIn this unit you will become an expert on the American poet of your choice along with becoming an expert on one of his/her poems. You will also learn the best possible practices for organizing, researching, drafting and edting your work.

Who were the people that lived on this continent before the first white settlers? How did they live? What happened to them? Where are they today? This unit begins to answer some of these baffling and important questions that do not seem to be discussed much in school.

Who pursuaded the colonists to break free? What was the middle passage like? What was the Age of Reason and who were its leaders? According to Aristotle, what are the classic elements of pursuasion?

What is Romanticism? What was included in the Romantic movement? Who led it? What is a folk tale? Who were the first American fictional heroes?
