It may be May but we’re busy as bees: what a week at the Edwardsville tennis recap!
The boys had a strong showing last week, with varsity defeating Alton 9-0 on Tuesday, and Principia School and Glenwood on Saturday in a double-header. The sweeps bookended a tough scrimmage match against O’Fallon on Wednesday. No team score was kept, but the two varsities played 8 singles and 4 doubles against one another in a great chance for players to get as many matches as possible during this shortened season. The conference team match will take place on May 11.
JV Tigers saw a lot of action as well, competing in the Belleville East Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Friday afternoon saw EHS fall 2-7 to Triad, but the boys bounced back with a 9-0 sweep of Granite City that night. On Saturday the JV went 2-0, with a 5-4 win over Mascoutah and a 7-2 win over Triad. Big shout-outs go to sophomore Sean Armstrong, who clinched the Tigers’ win over Mascoutah in a super-tiebreaker with the match tied 4-4 and everyone watching! Asked after the match for his reaction by Coach Schlueter, Sean said, and this is a real quote, “I’m not even awake yet.” Everyone on the JV played great in the 3-1 weekend. Ben Blake was particularly impressive, going 8-0 at 1 doubles and 2/3 singles all weekend.
This week the boys face Francis Howell Central on Wednesday, Collinsville on Thursday, and travel to Springfield to play the Senators on Saturday. The JV will stay home and compete in the Triad tournament Saturday.
JTT play saw ETA teams once again in a fantastic weekend. The 14u team roundly defeated MAC 44-21 in an awesome performance up and down the lineup! Both 12u teams rolled to victory over two Vetta teams: the two ETA 12u teams are undefeated on the season and tied for first place in the league. The 18u advanced team’s match against Cor Jesu was interrupted by rain with ETA leading, and will resume on May 16. Finally, but certainly not least, the 18u Gold girls turned in a STRONG performance against a talented Creve Coeur Racquet Club team to emerge with a 43-28 victory. The play was fantastic up and down the lineup.
Zoe Byron and Gabi Hill took 2nd in their respective divisions at the Level 7 in individual play.
