The 2020 summer JTT season came to a close over the weekend, as four Edwardsville teams took part in the district tournament. The season, which was shortened due to COVID-imposed St. Louis County youth sports restrictions, ended on a positive note for many of Edwardsville's players.
The 18u Advanced team faced Creve Coeur Racket Club in a best-2-out-of-3 baseball-style series. In the first match, Edwardsville won an easy victory 34-14. On the second day of play, Creve Coeur brought some reinforced firepower, and the two teams had a great match that came down to the wire. Thanks to steady play up and down the lineup, Edwardsville took home the victory 27-25 to win the series and clinch the District Championship for the 2nd year in a row. The undefeated season demonstrated great tennis from every member of the team! From left to right: Michael Karibian, Jade Dynamic, Jesse Hattrup, Morgan Marshall, Hannah Colbert, Chloe Trimpe.
The 14u team showed real resilience when their Saturday match was rained out. They bounced back ready to play well on Sunday against two tough teams. The 14s dropped a close match in the morning before emerging triumphant in the afternoon. Congratulations on a great weekend and a great season! From left to right: Gabriella Hill, Sophie Byron, Schaefer Bates, Joseph Cass.
Finally, the prepubescent powerhouses of Edwardsville's 10u team reigned supreme, as they did all summer through an undefeated season. In both singles and doubles, Edwardsville never lost more than two games in a set all day Sunday, securing two dominant victories. Just as importantly, the kids tried their hardest, moved their feet, and showed great sportsmanship en route to becoming District Champions for back-to-back years. Congrats on a great performance Sunday! From left to right: Johnny Curran, Timmy Curran, Amelia Hill, Michael McNamara.
We'd like to extend our thanks to every player and family that participated this JTT season. It was a wild ride, to say the least, but the tennis provided a great outlet for the kids in a trying time. Every player competed to the best of their ability, and friendships continued to grow on and off the court. If you see Emily in the next few months, give her a stupendous thank-you; she did a lot behind the scenes to make this season possible and the best it could be for the athletes.
Fall and winter JTT plans are still up in the air unfortunately, as are most things right now, and we appreciate everyone's patience and forbearance as situations try to get sorted out. As soon as we have any information, we will let you know.
As of right now, the girls tennis season is approved to proceed more or less normally by the IHSA. Tryouts will look to start on Wed., Aug. 12.
