What a month! Since our last roundup, the girls traveled north to the Lockport Invitational, finishing 2nd in a close 2-3 match against Neuqua Valley. It was a great weekend as the girls took on some of the best competition in the state.
The next week saw EHS claim not one, but two conference titles. On Monday, Oct. 7, the JV girls rushed to a victory, going undefeated in four doubles flights at the conference tournament to take home the crown.
Not to be outdone, the varsity followed up with a stellar performance, winning the 2 and 3 doubles flights, and the 3, 4, 5, and 6 doubles flights at the Southwestern Conference Tournament to regain the championship after losing to Belleville East last year. Big shout-outs to Hannah Colbert, Grace Hackett, and Hayley Earnhart, who all won third-set tiebreakers en route to winning their flights.
From there, the Tigers moved on to sectionals this past weekend. It was two long days at the EHS Tennis Center, but ultimately two Edwardsville entries qualified for state: Chloe Koons in singles, and Hannah Colbert and Chloe Trimpe in doubles. This is the second state qualification for both Colbert and Trimpe.
The other Tigers’ seasons came to an end, but everyone played fantastic: Grace Hackett battled JoJo Skaer in a valiant quarterfinal effort, while Hayley Earnhart and Emma Herman narrowly lost the match of the tournament 6-7(12), 7-6(5), 6-7(4) to Belleville East’s no. 1 team in a match that took over three and a half hours. Quincy defeated O’Fallon for the team sectional title, in a split that had to go to the sixth tiebreaker to be resolved. Edwardsville finished third, one point behind the pair.
The Tigers head to state today, with matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning in the west Chicago suburbs. Those wishing to follow the action can do so at www.ihsa.org.
